The Department of Physics was functioning right from the inception of the college in the year 1961. Initially, it supported only the Pre-degree courses. In 1962 when B.Sc mathematics was started, Allied Physics was taught at degree level. In 1969-70, the Department was upgraded to a UG department and it was also made a PG department in the year 1985-86. However, the PG course was transferred to the Centre for Post Graduate Studies in 1989-90, as all the PG courses in all the colleges were bifurcated and a separate centre was installed for PG studies and research. Since then the Department functions as UG Department and offering B.Sc. Physics only.

The duration of B.Sc. Physics is three years with 16 main theory papers, 8 main practical papers, two mathematics allied papers, two allied chemistry theory papers and two allied chemistry practical papers. Students also study four language papers, four English papers and one paper each on environmental Studies and Public Administration in Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). For internal assessment, tests are conducted periodically.

A separate building (Block) was constructed in the year 1992-93 for the Department. It has two spacious laboratories, three well-furnished classrooms, a staff room, a store room and necessary rest rooms. Right from the beginning, equipments were purchased periodically to conduct the practical classes. Now the laboratories possess more than 20 lakhs worth of instruments which are quite sufficient for conduct the entire main and allied practical classes. The department also has all the necessary audio and video aids for teaching as well as for conducting functions, seminars, conferences etc.

The Department has seven sanctioned teaching posts. At present only four faculties are working- three regular and one STC. There is one Storekeeper in the department to keep all the instruments or equipment purchased. In addition to these, the Department also has two MTS Staff for the practical classes and maintenance of the building.

The Department is periodically conducting seminars and conferences, inviting scientists and Eminent Professors to discuss the recent advances in Physics.

After graduation, many of our students join M. Sc Physics at Pondicherry University, KMGIPGS and also in Government colleges in Tamilnadu. Further, some students join in National Laboratories for research activities after post graduation.

Alumni of our Department are working in various positions such as University and college Professors, and also employed in government sectors as PCS officers, Tahsildhar, Police officers, etc.

VISION

To enable the students to capture the career with their fire focus and to provide world class education in Physics with available - high quality teachers, Green campus and generous funding from the Government of Puducherry.

MISSION

To provide higher education with nominal fee, enable the students to move to post graduation and research in Physics, develop the skills for other employments in Government and other sectors and to inculcate scientific temper among the students and hence in the society.

SCOPE OF THE PROGRAM

As Physics is the study of matter and energy, students will acquire knowledge in properties of matter and various forms of energy - and its utilisation in the society. Students - later will join as University and College Professors, school teachers and also get employment in Government service.
