The Department of Zoology was established in the year 1961 under the initiative of Professor Bindhu Mahav Rao who is the first head of the department of Zoology in this college which was affiliated under Madras University.
It is an essential hub for under graduate programme, and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of zoology. This department plays a crucial role in advancing our understanding of the diverse and intricate world of animals, from the smallest microorganisms to the largest mammals.
The primary mission of a Zoology department is to educate students in the fundamental principles of animal biology, ecology, behaviour, and evolution. These programs often offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses that cover various aspects of zoology, ensuring that students acquire a strong foundation in this field. Students are exposed to both theoretical and practical knowledge, learning about animal physiology, genetics, and ecology. One of the central functions of the department is to conduct cutting-edge research in the realm of zoology. Faculty members and researchers in the department investigate various aspects of animal biology, ranging from molecular-level studies to large-scale ecological research. These investigations contribute to our knowledge of animal behaviour, adaptation, and evolution, and they often have real-world applications in fields like conservation and environmental management.
Our Department of Zoology, faculty members are specialized in a wide array of sub-disciplines, including Entomology, Endocrinology, Molecular Biology, Fishery Biology, Ornithology, Arachnology and Marine Biology. These experts bring their unique perspectives to the department and often collaborate on interdisciplinary research projects. Their work is published in academic journals and shared at conferences, furthering the global understanding of animal life.
The department frequently collaborates with other departments, such as environmental science, genetics, and ecology and Marine Biology reflecting the interconnectedness of the biological sciences. This interdisciplinary approach enriches the research and educational opportunities available to students and faculty. It's not uncommon for Zoology department to collaborate with local wildlife conservation organizations, museums, and government agencies to carry out research projects and contribute to the protection of endangered species.
Additionally, our Zoology department maintains natural history collections that house preserved specimens, genetic materials, rare animal models and state-of-the-art equipment. These resources support both academic instruction and research endeavours.
The importance of Zoology departments extends beyond academia. They are integral in the training of future scientists, environmentalists, conservationists, and educators. Zoology graduates go on to pursue careers in research, teaching, wildlife management, and animal conservation. Their work impacts the health and preservation of ecosystems, the understanding of animal behaviour, and the welfare of countless species.
VISION |
To be a global leader in advancing scientific understanding and conservation efforts for diverse wildlife, ecosystems, and their interconnections, through cutting-edge research, innovative education, and impactful outreach initiatives within the Department of Zoology. |
MISSION |
The mission of the Department of Zoology is to explore and comprehend the complexities of the animal kingdom through rigorous scientific inquiry. We are committed to fostering excellence in research, education, and outreach, aiming to inspire a profound appreciation for biodiversity and contribute significantly to the conservation and sustainable coexistence of all living organisms on Earth. |
SCOPE OF THE PROGRAM |
Department of Zoology is a dynamic and multifaceted institution within the academic world. Its role encompasses education, research, and public engagement. As our understanding of the animal kingdom continues to evolve, department of Zoology play a crucial role in advancing this knowledge and ensuring that future generations are equipped to address the many challenges facing the world's diverse and interconnected ecosystems. The tireless efforts of faculty, students, and researchers in this department contribute to the betterment of our understanding of life on Earth and our ability to protect and conserve it. |
